winter residency at wilkes
Although Omnicron threw a monkey wrench in the plans for an in-person good time, the winter residency for Wilkes' creative writing students kicked off well on January 7th. Students, faculty, and alumni like myself were all in Zoom, but there was no loss of great speakers, lectures, discussions, or writing sessions. I was privileged to host and moderate the fun stuff (fitting my vivacious personality).
The fun stuff included Open Mic Night where students threw it down with amazing readings from their novels. Students were accosted by my funny and intrusive questions at Saturday's All Program Mixer. Folks had their cocktails and mocktails and coffee during our Happy Hour in Zoom (January is always dry for me though). And on Wednesday, the 12th, I was privileged to play alongside actress, Katelyn Sincavage in Dr. Bonnie Culver's one-act play, Accident.
With all that fun, the highlight of residency (for me) was meeting and getting tips from the leading ladies of Brown Girls Books Publishing. ReShonda Tate-Billingsley and Victoria Christopher Murray taught us writers the importance of the "hustle" and an "out-of-the-box" approach to marketing ourselves as writers.
